daily sun steps into 8th year

The daily sun, a leading English newspaper in the country, steps into the eighth year of its publication today.

A two-day programme began at the daily’s office at the Bashundhara Residential Area in the capital on Monday to celebrate the seventh anniversary.

Bashundhara Group Vice-chairmen Shafiat Sobhan Sanvir and Safwan Sobhan Tasvir inaugurated the celebration by cutting a cake in the evening.

Speaking on the occasion, Safwan Sobhan said: “It was not an easy task for us to launch the daily sun. It was not an easy start.

We had to face a lot of hurdles. The newspaper has turned into a daily of new dimensions within seven years with nice presentation of news.”

He expressed the hope that the daily sun would be the country’s best English daily in future.

Shafiat Sobhan thanked all members of the daily sun for their contribution to the progress of it. “Well done, daily sun,” he said.

The daily sun acting editor said: “We’re very much delighted to have two vice-chairmen with us on this auspicious occasion. We express our heartfelt gratitude to all members of the East West Media Group Ltd. We want to enrich the daily to make it the best English daily of the country.”

The daily sun office has been decorated with colourful balloons, festoons and banners in celebration of the anniversary.

There will be a get-together at the office of the daily today.

The new-generation English newspaper started its journey on October 24 in 2010 with the slogan, ‘True and impartial’, and eventually earned a huge popularity among the readers at home and abroad.

On the occasion of the seventh anniversary, President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan have given separate messages.

In his message, President Abdul Hamid said: “The role of newspapers and journalists is of paramount importance in flourishing democracy and establishing just and equitable society for any country.”

According to him, newspapers and journalists play a vital role in upholding the constitution, promoting human rights and rule of law and developing the country.

In her message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said: “The Awami League government has played a pioneering role in flourishing and empowering country’s mass-media.”

She said her government passed the Right to Information Act, 2009 and constituted the Information Commission, which have ensured people and mass-media’s right to get information.

Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, in his message, said the Group ventured into the media industry with the understanding that keeping people abreast of latest information in varied fields has become an important element of serving them and helping them develop intellectually and economically.

He said the media outlets under EWMGL have made the company the largest media house in terms of audience size and employment and one of the largest ones in Asia.

Apart from the daily sun, EWMGL owns Bengali dailies Bangladesh Pratidin and Kaler Kantho, television channel NEWS24, radio station Capital FM and online newspaper banglanews24.com.
